Preventing a New Famine in the Horn of Africa

CELEP excerpts from the EDD panel and further comments on preventing famine among pastoralists in the Horn of Africa can be found under ILRI News.

At the European Development Days 2011, 15–16 December 2011, Warsaw, Poland, CELEP was represented in a panel on “Preventing a new famine in the Horn of Africa: the role of the EU in building resilience”. This put the spotlight on the globally malfunctioning food system that does not respect the right to food of millions of people. To address this systematic failure, the panelists – comprising policymakers and practitioners – discussed how to prevent another crisis of this scale, with particular attention to the situation in the Horn of Africa,  and the role that the EU can play in reaching long-lasting sustainable solutions.

Panel composition:
• Mark Breusers, Caritas Belgium, representing Caritas Europa
• Fran Equiza, Regional Director – Horn, East and Central Africa, Oxfam GB
• Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response
• Ann Waters-Bayer, ETC AgriCulture, representing CELEP
The panel was moderated by Nazanine Moshiri of Al Jazeera English. The debate was opened by Ricardo Cortés Lastra, Member of European Parliament. The video of the panel discussion can be found under: http://live.eudevdays.eu/ (Friday, 16 December 2011, Auditorium C).
