Pastoralism & policy course in Uganda

The Karamoja Resilience Support Unit (KRSU) asked the International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) to run a workshop in 2017 to introduce a pastoralism and policy training course developed for East Africa to a multistakeholder group from Uganda. Workshop participants agreed that the training – if adapted to the Ugandan context – would enable more informed decision making in support of climate-resilient development and service provision in Uganda’s pastoral areas, especially Karamoja. In March 2018, KRSU organised a training-of-trainers course in Kampala to kickstart the adaptation process, which is to be managed by Makerere and Gulu Universities, Center for Basic Research (CBR) and Karamoja Development Forum (KDF).

The training process is based on the East Africa Pastoralism and Policy course developed by IIED (UK) and Feinstein International Center at Tufts University (USA). It was designed to help decision-makers and planners better understand the scientific rationale underpinning sustainable pastoralism, while strengthening the skills of pastoralists and their advocates to articulate the economic, ecological and social benefits of their livelihood systems and to argue for their inclusion in national policy.
