Land use for pastoralism & renewable energy in Kenya

At the Tropentag conference “’Competing pathways for equitable food systems transformation: trade-offs and synergies” in Berlin on 20–22 September 2023, Ann Waters-Bayer from the CELEP member organisation Agrecol Association for AgriCulture & Ecology presented a paper, co-authored with Hussein Wario, on “Climate justice in transforming land-use systems for food and renewable energy”. This was in the session on “Renewable energy and circular economy in the frame of water-food-energy nexus”. The presentation was based on a study conducted by her and Hussein Wario, Director of the Centre for Research and Development in Drylands (CRDD), Kenya, into “Pastoralism and large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects” for the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Bread for the World, Germany. The Tropentag presentation focused on cases in pastoral areas of Kenya. The PPT can be found here; a 4-page paper on the topic can be found here.

On 1 October 2023, Ann made a similar presentation in German (English title: “Landuse for renewable energy and pastoralism in northern Kenya“) at a weekend seminar on renewable energy, nature conservation and grazing organised by Agrecol in Kyllburg, Germany. The German-language PPT can be found here.
