Empowerment of pastoralist women in Sudan

Pastoralist women in Eastern Sudan managed to improve their livelihoods by producing alternative animal feed from local resources. They became able to do so after receiving training from a local pastoralist organisation supported by Oxfam Novib’s partner PENHA (Pastoral & Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa), a CELEP member. In the case study Empowerment of pastoralist women (2012, 4 pp), Karin van Dijk and PENHA colleagues describe how the women could increase the productivity of their goats so that they produced more milk and gave birth to more kids. The women used  the income they generated to improve the health and support the education of their children.
