Pastoralist Women for Health & Education (PWHE) is a Kenyan NGO based and working in Isiolo County. It was formed in June 1998 by a group of women from pastoralist background with the aim to promote the development of women and children. PWHE started out as a community-based organisation (CBO) and was created mainly to address the high illiteracy level, poverty and unjust social system impeding girl-child growth and women’s development. The founders also realised that, during droughts and conflicts, women and girls are mostly left behind to take care of the family. Traditionally, pastoralist communities see the male-children as the “standing army” of their communities. PWHE envisions the empowerment of girl-children and their pastoralist communities through peace-building initiatives and providing basic education to mitigate the impact of illiteracy, domestic violence and tribal conflict. It works in the following areas: education, health, economic and livelihood empowerment, peace building and conflict management, governance and local democracy including budget tracking of public funds. PWHE also addresses the crosscutting issues of environment, HIV/AIDS and gender. It undertakes peace-building and cohesion efforts because no meaningful development can be realised for pastoralist communities and others within Isiolo County if peace is not realised and inter-clan conflicts over resources are not eradicated. PWHE partners with like-minded organisations and relevant government departments in carrying out its programmes and attaining its objectives. It provides community training, peace dialogue meetings/training, civic education on constitution/devolved government, support to orphans and vulnerable children, and seed capital for community groups.
