Participatory planning for sustainable rangelands in Tanzania

The International Land Coalition (ILC) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) are supporting the Sustainable Rangeland Management Project (SRMP) in Tanzania working with the Ministry of Livestock Development and Fisheries. In November 2011, the project piloted participatory rangeland resource mapping in villages that are carrying out Village Land Use Planning (VLUP). SRMP seeks to secure land rights of pastoralists, agropastoralists and crop farmers while improving land management in Kiteto,
Bahi, Chamwino and Kondoa Districts. It also seeks to influence policy on these issues. It has introduced improvements to the VLUP process to contribute to sustainable rangeland management, e.g. by ensuring that livestock can remain mobile so that pastoral production systems can operate across village boundaries. Participatory rangeland mapping proved to be a useful tool for documenting and gaining a better understanding of methods taking such livestock movements into account in the VLUP process.
